Odlums to close with 26 jobs lost in Co Kildare

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 | News | No Comments

Twenty-six jobs are to go in County Kildare with the closure of the Odlums milling and packaging plant in Sallins.

Union officials have been told that the packaging operation will close within six months while the milling will cease within a year and half.

SIPTU has blamed the closures on the decision by Odlums owners, Origin Enterprises, to sell off its McCanns cereal brand name in the United States and has been told by the company that the decision was made because of the weakening dollar.

In the nineteenth century, three Odlum brothers were involved in separate milling operations. The mill that operated in Portlaoise, or Maryborough as it was known then, was opened by William Odlum in 1845. It was this mill that formed the basis of the present business. He was succeeded by his two sons, William P. and Richard - hence the company name at that time, W.P. & R. Odlum.
By the end of the 1920s the company was operating, in conjunction with various other milling interests, a total of nine mills. In the 1960s, rising standards of living led to a fall in flour consumption and a number of milling operations went out of business. Odlums found that in order to remain competitive, it was necessary to rationalise production. Some of the smaller mills were closed. The company now operates 3 modern flour mills in Dublin, Cork and Portarlington and a specialist oatmeal mill in Naas.
Up to 1988 Odlums was a family owned and managed company. Today it is wholly owned by Origin Enterprises PLC.

Intel’s Irish plant bypassed for new chips

Monday, September 29th, 2008 | News | No Comments

INTEL’S IRISH plant has missed out on an investment that had been expected to see work on a new product line commence next year. Staff at its plant in Leixlip learned this week that a new line of products that the chip maker had earmarked for the plant will not now be manufactured in Ireland next year.

The Irish Times has learned that Joshua Walden, vice-president in the technology and manufacturing group at the giant American technology company, visited the Kildare plant this week and informed executives that the facility would not be required to manufacture the next family of electronic chips.

PERFECT PITCH

Sunday, September 28th, 2008 | News | No Comments

The country’s first private GAA pitch — the exact dimensions of Croke Park — is being built at Carton House Golf and Country Club near Maynooth in a bid to attract inter-county teams.

Tyrone footballers are creatures of habit and staying at Carton House has been an integral part of the team’s preparations going back to 1986. Mickey Harte’s men stayed there before all their big games this year, culminating in last Sunday’s All-Ireland triumph.

Because of its size, the sand-based pitch will also be able to accommodate soccer and rugby pitches to FIFA and IRFU specifications. Brazil were the first international soccer team to stay at Carton and executive director Conor Mallaghan says they hope to attract international teams who are playing here as well as Premier League teams who want a base for pre-season training. The facility should be ready by next spring.

"It’s something we have planned for a long time," said Mallaghan, a nephew of Mickey Harte. "The 1986 Tyrone team stayed here and to accommodate them at that time, we had to beg, borrow and steal beds from St Patrick’s College in Maynooth. Mickey first brought a team here in 1991 when he was training the Tyrone minors."

Wexford and Fermanagh have also stayed at Carton this year, but usually went to nearby Westmanstown for training. "We just want to offer the best facilities, whether it’s GAA inter-county or club teams before matches or for training weekends, as well as rugby and soccer teams."

Record crowds for Ploughing Championships

Friday, September 26th, 2008 | News | No Comments

Record crowds have attended this week’s National Ploughing Championships, which ended this evening in Co Kilkenny.

Up to 55,000 people were present in Cuffesgrange today, bringing to 208,000 the number of patrons who have visited the event since Tuesday.

That figure makes it the best attended three-day event in the 77-year history of the championships.

The event will be held next year near Athy in Co Kildare, where the first championships were staged in 1931.

The head of the National Ploughing Association, Anna May McHugh, said she would not like the event to grow any bigger.

Ms McHugh said at no stage did she consider cancelling the event because of the recent bad weather.

She said the sunshine of the past week had helped to make it one of the most enjoyable championships ever.

Despite the high level of dust on site, Ms McHugh said it was still a very pleasant championship.

Flooding at Laraghbryan Cemetery

Cllr. McGinley was given the following reply to his motion to eliminate the flooding at the cemetery:

"The Water Services Section and Roads Maintenance Sections are currently reviewing the Capital Flood Alleviation Programme. This programme will be completed by the end of September and presented to the Local Area Committees at the October meetings, prior to presentation to the full Council. The Programme will include major catchment wide capital schemes and a commitment to provide funding to the Roads Maintenance Section for minor flood alleviation works as agreed.

Following the period of heavy rain in mid-August the Fire Service assisted in pumping out the floodwaters in Laraghbryan cemetery which relieved the immediate problem.

The Area Engineer has suggested that a possible solution to prevent the problem of flooding in the cemetery would be to lay a surface water pipe across the main road to the drain.

Estimates are being sought to have this task carried out. A preliminary estate for this work is between €5,000 and €7,500.

Cllr. John McGinley asked for this work to be carried out as a matter of urgency in order to remove the stress caused to grieving relatives.

Improvement works at the public car park in Maynooth

Cllr McGinley was given the following response to his motion to improve the landscaping on the eastern side of the public car park:

"The Council’s Parks Department has been asked to assist in the upgrading of this area."

Provisions of extensions to bus routes 66 and 67 in Maynooth

Cllr. McGinley was given the following update on the proposal to extend bus services:

"Dublin Bus has yet to apply to the Department of Transport (DoT) for the extension of the bus routes and therefore it would be premature to hold a meeting with them and the Area Committee. However, it is intended to meet Dublin Bus when their proposals are prepared and submitted to the DoT for approval.

Cllr. McGinley stated it is essential that Council engineers meet now with Dublin Bus in order to get agreement on the location of new bus terminus and the necessary traffic calming changes. He pointed that there was no point in waiting on Government approval before carrying out these infrastructural changes. This was agreed.

Additional Parking Maynooth Train Station

Cllr. McGinley was given the following update:

"The Council’s Transportation Department has contacted the DTO to invite their officers or consultants to attend the October meeting of the committee to make a presentation on proposals for Maynooth Railway Station."

Safe route along Rathcoffey Road

Cllr. John McGinley was given the following update on his motion:

"This matter is still under discussion with the NRA Road safety division. The estimated cost of the works is €250,000. If agreed, a source of funding will have to be identified. The project will be listed for consideration for the 2009 Budget."

Silken Vale Estate:

Cllr. John McGinley was given the following reply to his motion to have the main road in Silken Vale taken in charge:

"The road in this estate cannot be considered for taking in charge until the public consultation process has been completed in accordance with the statutory requirements. There are still some outstanding issues to be addressed before the formal process can commence. Development Control Department will prepare a detailed report for the next meeting of the Area Committee."

Cllr. McGinley stated the he was very disappointed with the report as his motion to have the main road taken in charge was agreed eight months ago. He demanded that there be an end to this long drawn out saga and that he wanted the public consultation process to begin at the next Area Meeting.

Green Water Pump Outside the Hula Bou Shop:

Cllr. John McGinley was given the folowing reply to his motion to have this ancient pump re-installed:
